Linn-Mar found a way to do something few teams have been able to do the past two seasons, slow down Ashley Joens.

City High showed in Tuesday’s season opener they are far from a one-person show.

One of top scorers in the state the past two seasons, Ashley Joens was held to 11 points while battling foul trouble but four other Little Hawks had at least eight points as fourth-ranked City High (1-0) rallied for a 55-47 win over No. 10 Linn-Mar (1-1) in the Mississippi Valley Conference opener for both teams in Marion.

Freshman Aubrey Joens led three City High players in double figures with 14 points while senior Sydney Schroder added 11 for City High (1-0).

Three freshman making their varsity debuts combined for 24 points for City High as Rose Nkumu had eight and Paige Rocca had two for the Little Hawks.

City High trailed 26-21 at halftime but outscored the Lions 34-21 over the final two quarters.

Senior forward Kenya Earl had eight of her nine points in the first half to keep City High within striking distance.
